Day off. Got in a marathon 4+ hours on the water, and am feeling the
effects of it now.... Very tired but happy.
Went out first at 11.30am. Weather was initially a bit overcast and wind
not so strong. Sun came out properly after about an hour and with it the
wind, and then I was nicely powered up on my 4.6. Water was quite flat
initially so not very exciting, but it definitely made turning round a lot
easier. Made a lot of nice tacks on the inside, as well as a few gybes and
some successful slam gybes on the outside. Definitely the majority of my
transitions were good, so was quite chuffed with my performance. My tacking
in particular improved a lot, as I gradually worked out the best way to do
it whilst out there, and am now quite confident with tacking a small board
(in this case the Axxis), on the inside at least.
Session was not completely comfortable though. Had a few problems with
staying upwind so spent a lot of the time trogging upwind whilst planing,
and often I didn´t have enough space to gybe (hence lots of tacking
practice). Think it was maybe the strong current (same direction as the
wind) that was carrying me downwind a lot.
With the wind fully honking now, came in at 2.30pm for a break. Went out
again half an hour later, and decided to take out one of our centre´s wave
boards to make the most of the stronger wind and also the waves that were
beginning to appear due to mid-tide. Weapon of choice...a shiny new 2003 JP
Wave 79, now free after the departure of the big group of Frenchies
yesterday. Nice! Wind was now howling leaving me fully powered up/slightly
overpowered on my 4.6. But with the wave board it was quite easy to keep
everything under control. Took me a few runs to get used to it, but then
was sailing it no probs, and really starting to appreciate the extra
lightness, liveliness and manouverability. Sailing it was surprisingly
easy, not the twitchy slow-to-plane ride I was expecting and definitely no
harder than the Axxis really, but it was clearly a much better board for
the nuking conditions. Even tried a little bit of waveriding on it at the
start, and although without much success it was good fun trying. Gybing it
went reasonably well - a few nice dry ones, and I definitely got the feel
for it on the new board. Finally I can see that my gybes are improving -
especially with the 4.6, which is much lighter and easier to handle than
the 5.2. Some good jumps but nothing special. The swell/chop didn´t seem
to be co-operating as well for jumping as on some other days. However for
the jumps that I did pull off controlling the super-light wave board in the
air was so much easier than the Axxis, as was recovering from spin-out. All
that was needed after a badly placed spin-out landing was a quick yank of
the tail with my back foot whilst still in the strap, and the board would
respond and plane away no probs. Very different to the Axxis with the
bigger fin which requires more forceful persuasion to recover it from
spin-out.
Unfortunately and not surprisingly after so long on the water, after a
while fatigue started to kick in big time, and performance deteriorated
rapidly as a result. Being slightly overpowered certainly didn´t help.
Eventually came in at 4.45pm, and with the tide now high a 10 minute swim
through the wind-shadow back to the beach was necessary. Never a great way
to finish.
Today almost gets the coveted 5 stars due to my good performance with my
tacking etc at the start, and the fun fun fun fully powered up afternoon
session with the new wave board later on. Tiredness/overpowered-ness at the
end and the resultant less good performance knocks it down to 4 stars
though.
